Course Details

The course has been designed to familiarise Electricians and Engineers with the fundamentals of Control and Instrumentation. The course will cover pressure and flow measurement. The students will be introduced to Single loop PID Controllers and PLC PID control and how signals are connected and how the controllers are configured.

The students will be shown and use a plant actuator controlled by the controllers, leading to an introduction to PID configuration.

Course Outline

Below is the course content, which includes a detailed outline of topics and materials covered in the course. Explore and enhance your knowledge!

Pressure E28

  • Pressure transducers, the students will be introduced to the different units eg Pascals, bar etc.
  • Pressure measurement distinguish between measurement of differential pressure, gauge pressure and absolute pressure.
  • Describe the operating principle behind each given method e.g. U tube manometer, diaphragm, bellows, Bourden.
  • Describe the range, limitations and typical process applications of given measurement methods.
  • Pressure transducer calibration explaining the terms span, zero sensitivity, also explain isolation procedure.
  • The students will calibrate a Siemens Sitrain transducer and Foxboro pressure transducer.
  • Refresher to the PID terms and calculations for the PID terms and tuning Pressure closed loop system

Flow E36 Element 1

  • Explain the types and operation of primary flow measuring elements.
  • Refresher of the instrumentation covered on the Level 2 course.
  • Explain the difference between the volume and mass flow rates.
  • Describe the principles of positive displacement, velocity, liquid head and varying and fixed pressure differential pressure measurements.
  • Further explanation of Flow measurement using differential pressure measurement with:
  • Venturi tube meter, Venturi and flow nozzles, Orifice plate, The Dall tube and elbow, pilot tube and dry and wet gas meter.
  • Explain the range, limits and applications of the measurement instruments above.

Flow E36 Element 2

  • Explain the operation, testing and calibration of given instruments.
  • The students will work on a rig controlling air flow with orifice plates and PLC used to control the PID, the actuator will be an inverter to control fan. A sitrain Siemens differential transducer will be used. The students will use the orifice plate calculators.
  • During the practical exercise students will understand the isolation and testing the instrument using external pressures from druck units, which will include a test and calibration procedures
  • Explanations of magflow instruments and measurement and calibration exercises.
  • Insight into the ultrasonic flowmeters.

Flow E36 Element 3

  • Explain the function, operation and setting of given controllers, cylinders and valves.
  • Describe the function, operation and calibration of pressure valves.
  • Introduction to control valves, types and their construction.
  • Overhaul, test and calibrate given control valves.
  • fault finding procedures on a closed loop pressure loop.
  • A further explanation of Control valves and procedure for calibration using a I/P.
  • Using the PID function in inverter drives to control flow
  • Understand the operation of control cylinders and valves and the calibration techniques.

Flow E36 Element 4

  • Commission, adjust, test and fault find on given instruments, controllers and control loops.
  • Overhaul, test and calibrate given instruments.
  • Explanation of the Overhaul, test and calibration given power cylinders.(The practical part of the element E36 4.2 will need to be done on plant)
  • Explanation of the Overhaul, test and calibration given control valves and positioners. (The practical part of the element E36 4.3 will need to be done on plant)
  • Commission and tune given control systems.
  • Fault find on given control loops and restore to correct operating state.
